A large forest patch (Area #3) on Columbia Association Open Space that is overrun with invasive plant species is being cleaned up and replanted. The forest patch is currently heavily invaded with Callery pear, Japanese honeysuckle, ivy, multiflora rose, and a plethora of other non-native weeds. To replant the site, Columbia Association first needs to control the invasive plants to a level where they won’t return and re-colonize the site immediately. This usually takes several seasons and is referred to as site prep. The goal of the project is to remove the invasive plants, knock the vegetation back, and replant the area with native trees, making the area more open and regenerating biodiversity over time. The project also features a small pollinator meadow installation (Area #4) and the option to expand and install a community forest enclosure (Area #5). Site prep will begin in August 2026 with the goal of planting Area #2 first this fall.
